For a long time (SCIENCE) believed that life could only exist in the (PRESENT) of sunlight and oxygen. Today, however, we know that this is not true. Some creatures live in the most (LIKE) places. In 1977 (EXPLORE) discovered holes or vents at the bottom of the deepest oceans. Superheated water comes out of these vents and this hot water provides the energy to support life for a (VARIOUS) of creatures including small white shrimps and shellfish in a place where there is no (NATURE) light at all.


In many countries, the first of April is a special day when people play (PRACTISE) jokes on one another. One of the most (FAME) of these jokes was shown on a British television news programme some years ago. The (REPORT) quite seriously gave a (DESCRIBE) of the 'spaghetti harvest' for the year, and even showed a film of people cutting spaghetti in the fields and hanging it up to dry. A lot of TV (VIEW) believed the report and became very (ANGER) when they later learned that it was all a joke!


I often hear people saying that life in the past was a lot better than it is today, but I don't think that this is true. Of course, the world does face a lot of (DIFFICULT), and too many people still live in (POOR) , but there have been a lot of (IMPROVE) in the last one hundred years. Thanks to the medical (DISCOVER) of the 20th century, people are (GENERAL) healthier-than ever before and they live longer, more (COMFORT) lives.
